October 4th is World Animal Day, a very special date to remember that animals are not things . Since 2017, the #Animalsarenotthings cause that we promote together with other entities has defended the need to reform the Civil Code so that it recognizes that animals are sentient beings and subjects of law. The campaign has received a great reception during these years, making itself heard in various institutional instances.
On April 20, 2021, a very important step was taken to achieve this De Cell Number objective, thanks to the admission for processing of the Bill to modify the Civil Code. Now the most important thing is missing: the approval and official publication of the new law; Unfortunately, it may take months or years for this to become a reality. This October 4, the animal strike action seeks to continue supporting this cause. Today animals are still things before the law but we hope for a short time.
The reform of the Civil Code would be one more step in line with other advances that are being made, for example, article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, signed by Spain, which states that "Member States will take full account the demands regarding the welfare of animals as sentient beings".
The change in the legal status of animals is urgent since it implies, among other things, that pets cannot be seized or that a judge takes into account the welfare of the animal in divorce proceedings, when determining who is will remain with him, regardless of who owns the animal.
The benefits of dog-assisted therapies are multiple: physiological, such as reaxation and lowering blood pressure; motor skills, such as improving fine and gross motor skills, increasing mobility and bimanual and hand-eye coordination; cognitive, favoring all learning processes, attention and concentration; emotional, improving verbal and non-verbal expression, reducing anxiety levels and increasing self-esteem; and, finally, relational benefits, improving communication, the ability to listen to others and work as a team, among others.
